Colorectal Cancer Deaths Continue Increasing in Younger Adults

Though cancer mortality has been decreasing over the past few decades, deaths from colorectal cancer in adults under age 55 have been on the rise, according to recently released statistics. Incidence rates for early-onset colorectal cancer also increased by 1-2% annually from 2015 to 2019.

Cancer is currently the second-leading cause of death in the U.S. An estimated 4 million cancer deaths have been averted since 1991 due to changes like smoking reductions, earlier cancer detection, and improved treatment options, but colorectal cancer has not followed this trend.

The statistics on cancer were released by the American Cancer Society and include data through the year 2021. Once the fourth-leading cause of cancer death in men and women under age 50, colorectal cancer is now the first-leading cause of cancer death for men and the second for women.

The reason for this increase in colorectal cancer cases and deaths in younger adults remains unknown. However, some suggested factors include increased rates of obesity, greater intake of highly processed foods, sedentary lifestyles, and exposure to environmental toxins, including microplastics. Daily Multivitamin May Improve Memory, Slow Cognitive Decline

Taking a daily multivitamin may be able to help prevent memory loss and slow cognitive aging in older adults, a recent study has found. Overall, the researchers estimated that multivitamin use slowed brain aging by the equivalent of 2 years as compared to a placebo.

Almost 1 in 4 Americans will be in an age bracket that carries an elevated risk of Alzheimer's disease by the year 2060, which has spurred research into simple and effective interventions for protecting brain function. Previous studies have suggested positive cognitive effects from a multivitamin with the latest study offering even more confirmation.

Data came from the COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS), a large-scale nationwide randomized trial. Following an in-clinic study and a meta-analysis of three separate studies, multivitamin supplementation was found to have benefits specifically for global cognition and episodic memory.

“Cognitive decline is among the top health concerns for most older adults,” said Chirag Vyas, first study author. “The meta-analysis of three separate cognition studies provides strong and consistent evidence that taking a daily multivitamin, containing more than 20 essential micronutrients, helps prevent memory loss and slow down cognitive aging.”

Why the Gut-Skin-Brain Axis is Critical to Your Health

Researchers continue to discover just how interconnected the human body is with links now documented between the gut, skin, and brain. Notably, the gut microbiome appears to greatly influence both skin health and brain health, which is why dietary changes like eating more fiber-rich and probiotic foods can also improve the skin and mental health. It works the other way, too, meaning that factors like environmental skin toxins and stress can negatively impact your gut microbiome. (More)

Heart Disease #1 Killer for 100 Years – But Still Overlooked

Heart disease has been the leading cause of death in the U.S. for a century now, yet more than half of participants in a recent survey did not identify it as the number one killer. Concerningly, almost half of American adults currently have some form of cardiovascular disease with high blood pressure being the leader. Death rates from heart disease have also been trending upwards in recent years after a long-term decline, and experts cite risk factors like obesity, diabetes, and sedentary living as contributing causes. Air Pollution, Heat Waves Can Worsen Eczema

Environmental hazards, like air pollution and extreme heat, have become more common in recent years, which could be bad news for those with eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis). That's because a recent study found that these types of events can aggravate eczema, potentially causing flare-ups. A few of the best solutions for dealing with environmental stressors include using a quality moisturizer to help protect against airborne pollutants, washing skin with a gentle cleanser regularly, and staying hydrated. Eating Kimchi Daily Could Lower Obesity Risk

Kimchi is a spicy fermented food that can benefit gut health with its prebiotic and probiotic content. According to some new research from an observational study, eating about three servings of cabbage kimchi each day could also lower obesity risk by as much as 11%. Just a half serving of radish kimchi per day had similar effects on lowering obesity risk in both men and women. A single serving of kimchi is usually a few tablespoons. (More)

Biggest Dangers to Mobility + 4 Tips to AVOID Mobility Loss

Mobility loss is often a concern for those approaching their “golden years”, but it doesn't have to be an inevitable part of aging. Apart from health conditions, mobility loss most often occurs due to a change in habits, particularly less physical activity and more time spent at a computer or sitting down – a use it or lose it scenario. To help prevent it, stay active by cycling through a variety of workouts and incorporate a bending and stretching routine that promotes range of motion in all your joints.
